06 february Shrinkflation a result of your local takeaway paying out commission

The BBC found a study carried out by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) from September 2015 and June 2017, which studied the price of over 17,000 food items.

The study found that 206 items in all food categories had shrunk in size, yet the price remained the same. Among bread and cereal the ONS found 36 cases of shrinkflation. Two of the largest categories with a high number of shrinkflation was meat and confectionary (source: 2019 January, BBC News).

Shrinkflation is also affecting the restaurant and takeaway industry. Restaurants and takeaways are being hit by high commission rates from some online food delivery platforms. Just Eat, Deliveroo, Uber Eats all charge high rates of commission to their partner restaurants and takeaways, with some restaurant owners saying they have no choice but to deliver smaller portions or higher menu prices in order to combat these high commission rates.

At easyFood we’re on a mission to end commission. As part the easyGroup, we believe in delivering value to our customers and restaurant owners. By eliminating commission, shrinkage of takeaway portions or over-inflated prices will become a thing of the past.
